When the 14th annual Cape Fear Independent Film Festival rolls around next May, a few special guest judges will be participating in the Screenwriting Competition.

Joel H. Cohen and Carolyn Omine, writers for Fox’s long-running animated series “The Simpsons,” will sit on the judges panel for the festival’s newest award, “The Don.”

Named for late Wilmington-native screenwriter Don Payne, who passed away in March, the award will honor the best produced independent feature screenplay. Cohen and Omine both worked with Payne on “The Simpsons,” before he went on to work on screeenplays for such films as “Thor” and a draft of next month’s sequel “Thor: The Dark World.”

The festival, which runs May 1-4, is the only competitive film festival in Wilmington and exhibits a focus on regional filmmakers.
